Freezer Paper Stencils

I was at my niece's 2nd birthday party.  A friend gave her the most amazing personalized sweatshirt.  It said "Sloss Rat" with an illustration of Sloss Furnaces.  (Both of her parents work at Sloss Furnace.)  I LOVED it and asked where the friend had bought it and she explained the whole process of freezer paper stenciling.  I have been a little bit addicted ever since.

The process is pretty easy and CHEAP!

Supplies!

What you will need:

  • A stencil you like
  • Exacto Knife
  • Stencil sponge or stiff paint brush
  • Iron
  • Freezer Paper (You will find this on the aisle at the grocery store with tin foil and wax paper.  It is not wax paper!! It is called Freezer Paper and even has a little note on it that it is "great for crafting".  One side is paper and one side is coated in plastic.)
  • Fabric Paint
  • T-shirt, bag, pants, pillow case, cloth napkin, etc...

What to do:

Trace the design onto the paper side of a piece of freezer paper.  Then cut out the pieces that will be painted onto the fabric.

Place the stencil on the fabric and then iron it on.

Using a stencil sponge or a paint brush dab the paint onto the stencil.  Allow to dry and add additional coats if necessary. (First picture)

Allow to dry fully and then peel the stencil off.  It will come away easily.  If it rips you may need to use the edge of the Exacto Knife on the smaller pieces but it will not be hard to pull away.  (Second picture)

Enjoy your AWESOME new shirt!  BEWARE!!!  This is addictive.  Or maybe I'm just a dork.  Check out some of the first few shirts I've done.

Jerry Garcia shirt for Scott for Christmas that is still on my desk and it is January 2.

"Beauty-Fro" for one of my beautiful "natural" teachers even though her sister, who also works for me, who is also "natural" is mad because she thinks I should have made her a shirt first.

A viking onesie for my boss's new nephew... pictures of the matching crocheted viking hat will come later.)  If you look very carefully you will see my dog peeking out from behind the onesie.

If you get a chance to make something please share!!!
